| Ferragudo
- Is a Charming quayside village opposite the
major town of Portimão, which is the second largest town on the Algarve. |
An
important traditional fishing community since at least the Roman period,
but with origins, probably, stretching back to the Phoenicians and
beyond, this charming quayside village displays all the cobbled charms
of Algarvian maritime life. |
 |
| The quay has a
number of outstanding sea food restaurants where you can sea your supper
being off loaded from the fishing boat and onto the traditional open-air
charcoal grill. |
| The fort of
São João de Arade was constructed in the 17the century along with its
sister fortress of Santa Catarina de Ribamar on the other side of the
estuary at Praia da Rocha to defend Portimão and the Arade estuary from
the frequent pirate raids of the time. |
| Ferragudo has
a superb beach, Praia Grande, with three bar/restaurants and safe
swimming for children on account of the shallow gentle waters protected
from the Atlantic by the port breakwaters. Every month on a Sunday
morning, there is a very popular flea market and, around the village are
some very pretty examples of traditional Portuguese architecture.
Restaurants
There are many excellent restaurants
in the village. The Ferragood is excellent and good value for money.
Also the Sueste on the Quayside is a lovely place to have lunch or
dinner and overlooks the Sea. The Praia Grande Restaurant also has a
lovely outlook over the beach and the sea. In the apartment you will
find more information and recommendations on restaurants, activities and
places of interest in the Algarve. |
